Cabo Verde at DC Francophonie 2014 Festival

Cabo Verde is one of the 40 countries participating  in the Francophonie Cultural Festival in DC, a month dedicated to celebrating Francophone and Francophile culture.

Taking place March 1 - April 15, 2014, the Festival includes concerts, films, theatrical performances, children's activities and more.

The events take place throughout the Washington area at the Festival’s partner institutions. For a full schedule, tickets, and information, visit francophoniedc.org.

The highlight of the Festival will be "La Grande Fête", which takes place March 21st at the Embassy of France from 7:00pm. Make sure you check detailed information for ticket purchase and come visit Cabo Verde's stand for typical Capeverdean food tasting and other special delicacies from the islands and all participating countries. This will be also a great opportunity to meet the Embassy staff.

Cape Verde - USA Business Forum Announced

The Government of the Republic Cape Verde in partnership with the US Millennium Challenge Corporation will host the Cape Verde-USA Business Forum in Boston, MA, on September 30th, 3:00-7:00pm.

Cape Verde’s Prime Minister José Maria Neves, will preside the forum with Mr. Jonathan Bloom, Deputy Vice President for West Africa, MCC 

Organized with the collaboration of the African Presidential Center, the high level event, aims at furthering bilateral economic relations between the two countries. It will bring together government officials, trade and investment promotion agencies, investors and businesses for discussion, networking, information sharing and business development.

Priority and key growth opportunity areas in Cape Verde will be emphasized, including Transportation, Banking/Financial Services, ICTs, Energy, Fisheries, Agribusiness, Maritime Services and Tourism.

Cape Verde and the World Bank Cooperation in the Transportation Sector

Ambassador Fátima Veiga was at the World Bank Headquarters on Friday, July 19th, to represent the Government of Cape Verde at the Signing ceremony of the loan agreement for the Cape Verde Transport Sector Reform Project.

The Transportation sector is one of the priority areas in the Government’s development agenda. This project will add to the almost 35 operations in the public and private sectors in which Cape Verde and the World Bank have partnered, making the multilateral institution one of the archipelago’s main partners for development.

Ms. Vera Songwe, Cape Verde’s World Bank Country Director, signed the agreement on behalf of that institution.

African Ambassadors Group joins ONE and OPIC in Push to Electrify Africa

image001 2Ambassador Fátima Veiga was one the African Ambassadors who joined efforts with the NGO ONE and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), to discuss and raise awareness of the need to increase access to electricity in Africa. The event took place at Capitol Hill on July 25th, 2013, where individuals from the public, private and non-profit sectors participated.

Energy is at the top of Cape Verde’s strategic development agenda and the Government has set ambitious goals, and made fast progress, towards electrifying the islands mainly by tapping into renewable energy sources.

Cantor Cabo-verdiano Bana Morre/ Cape Verdean Singer Bana Dies

bana01 14 12 2012O cantor Cabo-verdiano mais conhecido como Bana, faleceu em Lisboa na noite de sexta-feira, 12 de Julho. O cantor sofria de doença prolongada.

Adriano Golçalves,  de 81 anos, conhecido como o “Rei da Morna”  era sem dúvida um dos músicos Cabo-verdianos mais bem conceituados tanto em Cabo Verde como internacionalmente.

Na sequência do falecimento do artista, o Governo de Cabo Verde decretou 2 dias de luto nacional, a partir das 00:00 de segunda-feira 15 de Julho. O funeral terá lugar nesse dia em Lisboa, sendo que S.E. o Presidente Jorge Carlos Fonseca representará o Estado de Cabo Verde nas cerimónias fúnebres, acompanhando pela Ministra das Comunidades Fernanda Fernandes e o Ministro da Cultura, Mário Lúcio Sousa.


The Cape Verdean singer best known as Bana, died in Lisbon on the evening of Friday, July 12. The singer was suffering from prolonged illness.

Adriano Golçalves, 81, known as the "King of Morna" was undoubtedly one of the most well respected Cape Verde musicians, both in Cape Verde and internationally.

Following the death of the artist, the Government of Cape Verde declared two days of national mourning, from 00:00 of Monday, July 15.

The funeral will take place on that day in Lisbon, and H.E. President Jorge Carlos Fonseca will represent the State of Cape Verde in the funeral, accompanied by the Minister for Communities Fernanda Fernandes and Minister for Culture Mário Lúcio Sousa.
