National Alliance of The Cape Verdean Organizations Launch

On Saturday, January 19th, 2013, the National Alliance of the Cape Verdean Organizations (NACVO) held its first annual meeting in Bridgewater, CT. 

More than fifty Cape Verdean organizations met in 2011 and gave the mandate to the Consulate General in Boston to oversee the process.

"The Mission of NACVO is to promote the interests of community-based organizations in the United States through policy analysis, advocacy, coordination, capacity-building, and representation of the communities that they serve.” , according to the mission statement of the organization.

Cape Verde Low on Corruption Perception

The report, Corruption Perception Index 2012, produced by the NGO Transparency International, ranks Cape Verde as one of the least corrupt countries in Africa, second to Botswana and followed by Rwanda.

Transparency International releases the yearly report, having the latest been published on Wednesday, December 5, 2012. It ranks countries/territories on perceived levels of public sector corruption, on a score of 0 to 100, being 100 the lowest level of perceived corruption and 0 perceived as highly corrupt.

PM Neves Meeting With MCC Resident Country Director

NOTA DE IMPRENSA - Gabinete do Primeiro Ministro

O Primeiro Ministro, José Maria Neves, recebe em audiência esta sexta-feira, 16 de Novembro, às 12:00 horas, o novo Diretor do Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) em Cabo Verde, Kenneth Miller.

Neste, que é o primeiro encontro entre o Chefe do Governo e o Responsável do MCC, estarão sobre a mesa o novo financiamento desta organização norte americana a Cabo Verde no valor de 66, 2 milhões de dólares e os projetos a nível de água e saneamento e administração e gestão da terra a serem implementados ate 2017.

A ajuda ao desenvolvimento dos Estados Unidos da América começa a chegar ao arquipélago a partir de 30 de Novembro próximo.

PRESS RELEASE - Prime Minister's Office

Prime Minister, José Maria Neves, meets today in Praia, at 12:00pm local time, with the new Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Country Director for Cape Verde, Mr. Kenneth Miller.

In this first meeting with the Resident Country Director, the PM will  discuss the Second MCC Compact, a USD$66.2 million program financed by the US agency. The projects will encompass improvements in Water & Sanitation Systems and Land Administration and Management, which will be implemented through 2017.

November 30th, 2012, marks the official start of the Program.

Embaixadora Fatima Veiga Participa em Conferencia sobre Aristides Pereira

A Embaixadora de Cabo Verde para os Estados Unidos, Maria de Fátima Veiga participa Sábado, 17 de Novembro, numa conferência intitulada: Aristides Pereira: Minha Vida, Nossa História. O evento terá lugar no Bristol Community College (BCC), no campus de Fall Rivers, MA, das 10am - 2:00pm.

Para além da Embaixadora, participam também no encontro o ex-Embaixador Americano para Cabo Verde, Vernon Penner e o escritor e autor do livro que dá título à confêrencia, José Vicente Lopes. O autor estará disponível para autografar cópias do livro.

A par da conferência, abre a exposição do fotógrafo Ron Barboza, dedicada à vida do ex-Presidente Aristides Pereira. Recorda-se que esta última teve inauguração em Washington, D.C., a Janeiro de 2012, resultado de uma parceria da Embaixada Cabo-verdiana e do Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars.

A exibicao fotográfica estará aberta na Galeria de Arte Grimshaw-Gudewicz do BCC.

Bristol Community College’s LusoCentro presents the Cape Verdean Conference: Aristides Pereira: Minha Vida, Nossa História. The conference will be held on Saturday, November 17 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the BCC Fall River Campus.

The conference will focus on the former President Aristides Pereira, the first president of Cape Verde, after its Independence. Former U.S. Ambassador to Cape Verde, Mr. Vernon Penner, and the current Cape Verdean Ambassador to the U.S., H.E. Maria de Fátima Veiga, will both share their perspectives and experiences with the former President.

In addition, Mr. José Vicente Lopes, author of the recent book, Aristides Pereira: Minha Vida, Nossa História will be at the conference for discussion and book signing.

The BCC Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery will be open for the exhibition of photographs of former President Pereira by Cape-verdean- American photographer, Ron Barboza.

A light lunch will be served at 1 p.m., with music by Benevindo Cruz.

Poesia Cabo-Verdiana na George Washington University

No dia 2 de Novembro a Universidade George Washington no âmbito do programa de celebração da Língua Portuguesa e da Cultura da Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa (CPLP), organizou um pequeno certame sobre o Mundo Lusófono, que centrou sobre o tema: Poesia e Prosa no Mundo Lusófono.

A referida cerimónia que decorreu no auditorio daquele estabelecimento de ensino, contou com a presença  de representantes das Embaixadas em Washington, dos países que falam a língua portuguesa, nomeadamente: Brasil, Angola, Cabo Verde, Moçambique entre outras representações de diversas esferas do meio académico de DC.

A Embaixada de Cabo Verde em Washington esteve representada pela Diplomata Isabel Oliveira, que fez uma incursão pela “ Poesia Contemporânea no Feminino em Cabo Verde” na esfera da poetisa Vera Duarte.

Também de mencionar a presença da Cabo-verdiana Dra. Dulcídia Benrós, da Granston High School East, em Cranston, RI, que abordou o tema: “A Diáspora Cabo-Verdiana nos Estados Unidos da América”

Cape Verdean Poetry at George Washington University

On November 2, 2012, the Portuguese Language and Lusophone Studies Program at George Washington University hosted an event celebrating Portuguese language. The presentations centered on the theme “Prose and Poetry in the Lusophone World”,

Embassies representing Portuguese Speaking Countries - Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Brazil - participated in the celebration with poetry readings, lectures and performances.

On behalf of the Embassy of Cape Verde, the diplomat Isabel Oliveira made a presentation on Contemporary poetry in Cape Verde, focusing on women contributions in particular the Cape-Verdean poet, Ms. Vera Duarte

Also from Cape Verde, Ms. Dulcídia Benrós, a teacher at Granston High School East, in Cranston, RI, shared a lecture on the experiences of the Cape Verdean Diaspora in the US.
